Workshop Overview
Part 1. An Overview of Single-Session Therapy
This workshop will describe walk-in single-single session therapy, also referred to as “open-access” or “one-at-time” therapy. The benefits to a community of a walk-in, open-access option include:
· The history, rationale, and research supporting the notion that most counseling is brief and that “one” is the modal number of sessions will be covered.
· The various forms of open-access sessions including in person (walk-in and by appointment), telephone, text based, and virtual approaches will be discussed.
· Single sessions of therapy will be noted as one form of brief therapy.
· The provision of single-sessions to a variety of cultural groups and the fact that it is a preferred option for some community members who tend to be anxious or skeptical about mental health services will be highlighted, including the research supporting this finding.
Part 2. Some How-to’s for Conducting Single-Sessions
We will describe what is called the “single-session mindset”, a set of ideas that enhance the confidence of clinicians that positive and long-standing outcomes often occur in a single-session. We will then describe:
· How a single-session is organized and some of the therapeutic principles.
· A strength based/ resource focused approach that emphasizes solution-focused and narrative approaches will be offered while recognizing that many models of therapy lend themselves to a single session approach.
